Grab a seat! . . .you have 41 to choose from in Shorewood’s newest public art project, “Best Seats in the House.” This exciting event, following in the footsteps of last year’s successful “Butterflies in Flight,” will engage the entire community this summer. Beautifully decorated cedar benches, featuring the talents of local artists, are on display throughout the Shorewood Business District along Oakland Ave. and Capitol Dr., and other landmark Shorewood locations including the library, Village Hall, Shorewood Police Department, Shorewood Fitness Center and Shorewood Post Office. Meet and greet the artists from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, June 5 at designated bench locations, when they will talk about their work and answer questions.

According to Barb Caprile, marketing director for the Shorewood Business Improvement District which is producing the event, “Public art projects enrich communities culturally and create a synergy among residents, community groups, businesses and artists. Shorewood’s 2010 project will showcase Shorewood’s shops, restaurants and beautiful business district and Village by attracting new visitors/customers to the area throughout the summer months.”

Many of the artists featured in this year’s event live in Shorewood, Wis., including Melinda Fishman, Donna Burdge, Don Berg, Amy Thomas, Leann Wooten, Dave and Mary Jo Thome, Jenny Steinman Heyden, Bruce Seeds, Cindy Shuelke and numerous students from both Atwater School and the Shorewood Intermediate School. The benches have been creatively decorated using paint, mosaic, ironwork and mixed media. Brochures listing each bench location and artist are available at each sponsoring business and Village Hall, or by visiting www.shorewoodwi.com.

The Shorewood Foundation is the major underwriting sponsor of “Best Seats in the House.” The event will be on display from June 5-August 15 and a public auction will be held on Sunday, August 29 when the benches will be sold to benefit the Shorewood Foundation. Please call 414.962.7002 or e-mail barb@shorewoodwi.com for more information.

The 2010 HAPLR Index was just released and in our category of 1,562 libraries, the Shorewood Public Library ranked 28th. But what is more impressive is that out of all the libraries in Wisconsin, Shorewood ranked 4th – higher than any other Milwaukee County library! The index uses federal data provided by 7,930 public libraries in the U.S. and it identifies those libraries with the highest input and output measures. Shorewood’s success is due to terrific community support. Congratulations to Library Director Beth Carey and her talented team of librarians who enthusiastically serve our Village. Stop by the Shorewood Public Library soon at 3920 N. Murray Ave. and see for yourself how great a community library can be! Our library is at the center of the community.

SPECIAL NOTE: The Friends of Shorewood Public Library is pleased to invite Shorewood adult residents to enter “Art Between the Pages,” a new, juried art exhibition showcasing local talent. “Art Between the Pages” will be on display from June 18 through August 29 at the library, celebrating the richness and talents of the Shorewood community and demonstrating what a desirable place Shorewood is to live, work and raise a family.

All Shorewood residents age 18 years and older are invited to enter “Art Between the Pages.” Original work in clay, fiber, glass, leather, metal, painting, paper, wood, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media is eligible. Work must be original and produced by the exhibiting artist, and must be appropriate for display in space available at the library, including walls and the tops of low bookcases. (There are no locked cases.)

Applications for “Art Between the Pages” must be received by Saturday, May 22. There is no fee to enter and artists may either send in photos of one to two pieces of work, or drop off their original art for jurying on Saturday, May 22 between 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Library. (Original work can then be picked up the same day between 3-4 p.m.) Exhibit applications are available for pick up at the library or may be downloaded from the library website at www.shorewoodlibrary.org.

Cash awards of $150, $100 and $50 will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. Work may be priced for sale, but all sales must be handled between the artist and customer after the show closes on August 29. All work will be insured during its display at the Library. An opening reception will be held at the Library on Friday, June 18 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Shorewood residents and guests will be invited to meet the featured artists, enjoy complimentary refreshments, and network with their neighbors and friends.

For more information about “Art Between the Pages,” contact Beth Carey at the Shorewood Public Library at 414.847.2676 or beth.carey@mcfls.org.

Shorewood Conservation Committee Builds Community Partnerships

Cross-sector partnerships are common buzz words, but in Shorewood they mean high-impact community change. Shorewood’s Conservation Committee continues to work in partnership with the Village, local businesses, Shorewood Schools and residents to move toward environmentally friendly practices. The results are exciting – and there are many green initiatives taking root in Shorewood.

Shorewood recently passed a resolution to become an eco-municipality, joining other Wisconsin cities that pledge to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, reduce dependence on chemicals and other manufactured substances, and reduce dependence on activities that harm life-sustaining ecosystems. Village staff is receiving training on these principles and is working to develop a long-term Village sustainability plan that will have the entire Village working together toward these goals.

As this plan is taking shape, other initiatives through the Conservation Committee are expanding. Recycling, once just residential pick-up, now includes receptacles on Village properties and parks, at our schools and on Shorewood’s main streets. The latest improvement is to have better marked recycling bins at the Village’s outdoor summer events. And the Village is also considering a switch to a natural lawn care program to improve the health and safety of our residents, pets and our valuable lake and river.

In the business district, progress has been made in the pilot program for Green Leaf Awards. Several businesses are collaborating with a volunteer through the Conservation Committee to meet certain criteria outlined in an assessment tool that helps businesses implement green practices. Suggested changes not only help reduce business’ carbon footprint, but often integrate smart business decisions that save money and increase customer base and loyalty.

In the Shorewood School District, community organic gardens and a host of other new green projects are taking place. Recently, the Intermediate School held a green event where students took a “lunch-break” from their typical day’s usage of 125 polystyrene plates (that decompose in a landfill a gazillion years from now!), and instead, used a paper plate made from pre-consumer recycled fiber for their hot lunches.

Plus, in homes throughout the community, the Conservation Committee is starting a mentoring program for residents who want to implement a home composting system to turn yard waste, fruit/veggie scraps and coffee grounds into nutrient-rich soil and keep solid food waste out of the landfill.

Healthy green initiatives are taking hold in Shorewood! Everyone can do more at home, at work and at school to implement environmentally friendly practices and protect and preserve our precious resources.

The Village of Shorewood will soon have a beautiful new thoroughfare running from its east to west boundaries when Capitol Dr. is renovated this spring/summer. The full length of Capitol Dr. from Estabrook Pkwy. to Lake Dr. in Shorewood will be reconstructed, including pavement, curb and gutter, and sidewalks. New streetscaping elements and street lights will also be incorporated into the project.

Construction will begin in May. Work on the Oak Leaf Trail bridge at Capitol Dr. and Wilson Dr. (serving as a gateway entrance to the community), and on the road surface east of Oakland Ave. will be completed first. Then work will begin on the road surface and median west of Oakland Ave. Throughout the construction traffic lanes will be kept open in at least one direction. Detours are planned and buses along Capitol Dr. will be re-routed. Watch for signs posted with details about street closures, etc.

By the end of the year, the newly renovated Capitol Dr. corridor will be a beautiful addition to Shorewood’s business district and the community. The Village of Shorewood is appreciative of everyone’s patience during the construction – and looks forward to unveiling an exciting and vibrant new streetscape later in 2010. More information on the project is posted on the Village of Shorewood website at www.villageofshorewood.org and at www.capitoldrive.info.

Saturday, March 6 • 9-11 a.m. OR Wednesday, March 10 • 6-8 p.m.

The Shorewood Plan Commission, together with the Shorewood Village Board, invites Shorewood residents to participate in the development of the Village of Shorewood Comprehensive Plan. Beginning January 1, 2010, the State of Wisconsin requires that all community decisions regarding land use are consistent with a comprehensive plan. This plan seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for the long-term planning of the Village to best meet the needs of residents, visitors and other stakeholders in areas such as housing, transportation, governmental services, utilities, economic development and land use. How would YOU like to see Shorewood look in 2030 and beyond?

Your participation is vital and will serve as the foundation for the plan’s development.
Provide your input and ideas at a family-friendly Open Houses to be held at the Shorewood Library (lower level) on Saturday, March 6 • 9-11 a.m. AND Wednesday, March 10 • 6-8 p.m. Choose either date to attend!

For more information about the Comprehensive Plan or to provide feedback online, please visit the Village of Shorewood website at www.villageofshorewood.org or contact Ericka Lang at 414.847.2647 or elang@villageofshorewood.org.

An official groundbreaking ceremony took place on Tuesday, December 8 at the corner of Oakland Ave. and Kensington Blvd. when almost 50 people, including Village staff and trustees and business owners, gathered to learn more about The Cornerstone, Shorewood’s premier mixed-use development.

The Cornerstone will feature three and four stories with 25 luxury apartments, a dynamic courtyard and approximately 11,000 sq. ft. of first floor retail space. Anchored by Alterra Coffee and also including a bar/restaurant, wine retailer/wine bar and a woman’s clothing boutique, the vibrant retail space will act as a community gathering place. When completed, this development at Shorewood’s most northern border will literally provide “the cornerstone” for the gateway into Shorewood’s vibrant business district. Construction has already begun, with the retailers and first apartments anticipated to open in early fall 2010. The building will be completed in fall 2010.

The Cornerstone is being developed by WiRED Properties, a competition-winning development firm based in Milwaukee. According to WiRED owner Blair Williams, “Construction of The Cornerstone is an exceptional opportunity to create an innovative development that brings together upscale apartment living and retail space under one roof. Our passion for community allows us to introduce a unique property at the northern gateway to Shorewood - truly a cornerstone of fine living and shopping.”
