CAPITOL DRIVE CONSTRUCTION BEGINS IN MAY

The Village of Shorewood will soon have a beautiful new thoroughfare running from its east to west boundaries when Capitol Dr. is renovated this spring/summer. The full length of Capitol Dr. from Estabrook Pkwy. to Lake Dr. in Shorewood will be reconstructed, including pavement, curb and gutter, and sidewalks. New streetscaping elements and street lights will also be incorporated into the project.

Construction will begin in May. Work on the Oak Leaf Trail bridge at Capitol Dr. and Wilson Dr. (serving as a gateway entrance to the community), and on the road surface east of Oakland Ave. will be completed first. Then work will begin on the road surface and median west of Oakland Ave. Throughout the construction traffic lanes will be kept open in at least one direction. Detours are planned and buses along Capitol Dr. will be re-routed. Watch for signs posted with details about street closures, etc.

By the end of the year, the newly renovated Capitol Dr. corridor will be a beautiful addition to Shorewood’s business district and the community. The Village of Shorewood is appreciative of everyone’s patience during the construction – and looks forward to unveiling an exciting and vibrant new streetscape later in 2010. More information on the project is posted on the Village of Shorewood website at www.villageofshorewood.org and at www.capitoldrive.info.

An official groundbreaking ceremony took place on Tuesday, December 8 at the corner of Oakland Ave. and Kensington Blvd. when almost 50 people, including Village staff and trustees and business owners, gathered to learn more about The Cornerstone, Shorewood’s premier mixed-use development.

The Cornerstone will feature three and four stories with 25 luxury apartments, a dynamic courtyard and approximately 11,000 sq. ft. of first floor retail space. Anchored by Alterra Coffee and also including a bar/restaurant, wine retailer/wine bar and a woman’s clothing boutique, the vibrant retail space will act as a community gathering place. When completed, this development at Shorewood’s most northern border will literally provide “the cornerstone” for the gateway into Shorewood’s vibrant business district. Construction has already begun, with the retailers and first apartments anticipated to open in early fall 2010. The building will be completed in fall 2010.

The Cornerstone is being developed by WiRED Properties, a competition-winning development firm based in Milwaukee. Shorewood Butterflies in Flight Public Auction August 30

The unique and beautiful display of custom-decorated butterflies in Shorewood has been the talk of the town this summer, but will soon draw to a close. The culmination of the “Butterflies in Flight” public art event takes place on Sunday, August 30 at Hubbard Park Lodge, 3565 N. Morris Blvd., when the butterflies will be sold to the highest bidders at a public auction to benefit the Shorewood Foundation, the event’s presenting sponsor.

“We are sad to see our butterflies flutter away,” says Barb Caprile, marketing director for the Shorewood Business Improvement District which produced the event. “This amazing public art event has brought our entire community together and attracted guests from all over the country. We are most appreciative of the support of the Shorewood Foundation in helping us launch this first-time event. And we look forward to staging another public art exhibition next year – we are already thinking about a new form to decorate!”

The public is invited to attend the August 30 auction (starting at 4:30 p.m.) for $10 per person, which includes delicious appetizers and lemonade, a cash bar, and a meet-the-artists reception. In addition, butterfly notecards, posters, bookmarks, and specially designed butterfly jewelry will all be for sale to benefit the Foundation.

The auction of the butterflies will begin at 5:15 p.m. Cash, check or credit cards will be accepted and butterflies need to be taken home that evening. (The butterfly form is freestanding on three metal legs and will be sold without the wood base. All the butterflies have been clear-coated and are suitable for long-term outdoor display.) Bidding sheets are available at each butterfly location to pre-bid on your favorite form, especially if you are unable to attend the auction. Please visit www.shorewoodwi.com to see photos of all 30 butterflies. Questions? Call 414-962-7002.

Shorewood Gardens Tour To Feature “Plant Doctor” Melinda Myers

Shorewood is a treasure trove of some of the most fabulous private gardens on the north shore. Most of us only get a chance to get a peek at them once a year and that’s coming up at the 4th annual Gardens Tour on Saturday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Whether you’re a novice or an expert, you won’t want to miss this adventure into exquisite gardens in full bloom, beautiful landscaping and unique, decorative garden art.

As part of this special day, Melinda Myers, Milwaukee’s own “Plant Doctor,” will be at the Eastwood Condominiums courtyard, 3942 N. Oakland, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. to answer gardening questions. Myers, best known for her gardener-friendly and practical approach to landscaping, has more than 25 years of horticulture experience. She has authored 19 books, has been the host of “Great Lakes Gardener” on PBS, and appears regularly on network television and radio throughout the country. Her books will be available for sale and signing.

The focus of this year’s tour is outdoor living. Some of Shorewood’s most imaginative and talented gardeners will graciously open their gardens to share their ideas in creating a seamless flow between outdoor and indoor living spaces. Tour-goers can pick-up innovative ideas for their own yards and see the new trend in creating spaces where families, friends and neighbors play, relax, cook, entertain and celebrate.

Stops on the self-guided tour will include residential gardens, plus the rain garden adjacent to Village Hall, the Meditation Garden at St. Robert Church and the rooftop garden at the Garden Room.

Tickets are $10 and are available at Shorewood Village Hall; the Department of Public Works (DPW), 3801 N. Morris Blvd.; the Garden Room, 2701 E. Capitol Dr.; and Bayside Garden Center, 400 E. Brown Deer Rd. - or may be purchased at any of the gardens on tour day. New this year! Custom-created cards, featuring colorful garden photos including some of the Shorewood gardens on the tour, will be available for purchase at the Eastwood Condominiums. A packet of 10 cards with envelopes is $12. After the tour, cards will be available for purchase at Village Hall and the Shorewood DPW. Tour and notecard proceeds will benefit the Shorewood DPW, and will be used to purchase annual flowers for Village boulevards and planters.

Melinda Myers’ appearance is sponsored by Kanavas Landscape Management of Elm Grove, Wis. Professional staff from Kanavas will join Myers to answer landscaping questions.
