Open Book Co-Op Bookstore To Become a Reality
Plans are in place to open a new bookstore in the Village on November 1. The Open Book cooperative is a store for the community, by the community. Dedicated neighbors and hundreds of people, mainly in Shorewood, have signed up to be supporting members.
The Open Book store will be in a familiar location, the former Harry W. Schwartz site at 4093 N. Oakland Avenue, which closed earlier this year. As customers walk through the doors, many good memories will return as they catch the aroma of freshly brewed coffee coming from the café. The store will have an open layout with an arrangement of sofas and chairs so browsers can leisurely leaf through selections from an inventory that will be a combination of two-thirds new books and one-third quality used titles. There will be an order desk so customers can get what they can’t find on the shelves. Many of the people who worked at the Schwartz store will be back on the staff to serve customers in the same helpful, knowledgeable way.
Memberships are being soliciting to give Open Book the financing it needs to buy book inventory, build shelves, etc. Signing up is easy, and the Open Book website has credit card capability. Visit www.openbookcoop.com and choose from a variety of memberships. Have questions about Open Book? Contact Keith Schmitz at 414.963.0847. It will be great to have a bookstore back in Shorewood!
COMMUNITY INVITED TO ATTEND SHOREWOOD FOUNDATION DINNER
Our Village is deeply grateful to the Shorewood Foundation for its many financial contributions to the community. From the 4th of July Fireworks to the seasonal lighting in the business district, this non-profit organization, founded in 1964, combines individual donations into grants that make a big difference in our Village.
Each year, the Shorewood community is invited to attend the Foundation’s Annual Dinner and Auction, to learn more about its mission and to help raise funds that will be earmarked for future grants to benefit all of Shorewood. This year’s event will be held at Hubbard Park Lodge on Saturday, November 7, with cocktails and a silent auction at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Cost is $100 per person. For details, call Shorewood Foundation board members Mike McCauley at 414.277.5525 or Jane Hawes at 414.964.6898.
